The Firekeeper’s Daughter

This is a YA book but really has such a heavy topic and discussion that I want to stand on a soap box like Tipper Gore and suggest YA level suggestions (I am kind of kidding but like maybe not). My 11 year old niece loved this and loaned me her copy with the whisper of “this is great but there’s a lot about sex and drugs.” And Ellie, you didn’t lie. I’m mildly mature enough for this content. I loved this story. I loved the main character and her complicated family. Although very community specific, understanding the finances of being a registered tribe member and the complications that go with that were hugely mind opening to me. Such a beautifully told story about the deep heartbreak in a community and the importance of involving the community in it’s own change.

Do I recommend: Yea but to everyone but my 11 year old niece
